Heavenly Father we continue to pray for the innocent citizens of Mosul where Iraqi Military aided by the USA are trying to prise the city from Islamic Militants.  We pray that compassion is shown rather than misguided fanaticism so that once more the city is at peace.  We pray for the families of those killed, the injured, who are suffering untold misery and children, who are being traumatised by the actions of these men and women.  We pray for Syria where Islamic State is losing more ground to the Syrian forces aided by both Russia and Iran.  We pray for those who are opposed to the dictatorship of President Bashar al-Assad.  We pray for the Christian minority and the Yazidi people as well as other minority groups, which make up the population of this region of the Middle East.  We ask this in your name, Lord Jesus. Amen

PRAYING FOR OUR NEW VICAR –Please continue to pray for our new vicar to fulfill both our needs and those of our Bishop Paul. We know that candidates have applied for the post and a short-list has been prepared. Interview day will take place during Wednesday 19th April in St. Mary’s Hall and we will know nothing further until the interviews have taken place.

COFFEE POT – There will be no Coffee Pot on either Wednesday 12th April or Wednesday 19th April when St. Mary’s Hall will be used for the Easter Trail Day and Interviews for the new vicar respectively. It will be also closed Monday 17th April, Easter Monday.

ST MARY’S APCM - St Mary's Annual Parochial Church Meeting 2017 will be held on Monday 10th April at 7.30pm. Please make a note of this in your diaries. Fresh blood brings new ideas and often a renewed enthusiasm in any organisation. The time leading up to the annual meeting provides a perfect opportunity for you to consider what you could bring to the mission of St Mary's by joining the PCC or becoming a Churchwarden. At the meeting we elect 12 ordinary members of the PCC and 2 Churchwardens (both Dave Townsend and Sue Megahy are willing to stand again). Please speak to me, Dave or Sue if you'd like to know more. Harry Hughes  PCC Secretary

ST. MARY’S PCC ANNUAL REPORT AND ACCOUNTS FOR 2016 - Copies of the latest report are now available on our church website and at the back of church. Everyone who receives Pews News by email should also have been emailed a copy. The report gives an overview of what we achieved in 2016 and of where our church's money came from and went to! The report will be formally presented at the annual meeting on 10th April, but it is helpful if people can take a look at it in advance.

EASTER FLOWERS - Flowers brought to the Memorial service at 6.30pm on Good Friday in memory of loved ones who have died will be used to decorate the Church for Easter. Greenery would also be welcome and can be brought then or on Saturday morning. Brian Bull

LENTEN ADDRESSES – A year ago set myself a small task of preparing a series of special addresses for the Tuesday services of Holy Communion during the five weeks of Lent.  It had not occurred to me to do so this year until a request came from a parishioner.  By way of response I have prepared another series for the Tuesday and some of the Thursday services. The following is the final one.

The River and the Sea

BITE SIZE PREACHING TRAINING - Perhaps your vicar has encouraged you to speak in a service, or maybe members of the PCC have said they feel you have a gift for interpreting scripture.  This may arise as they and you begin to discern a vocational call.  If so, this is a good starting point to test the waters.  This 6-session course is for those who may be asked by their parish priest to step out of the pew and into the pulpit.  It offers simply an introduction to preaching, looking at why we preach, who we are preaching to and different styles of preaching; we look at scripture in its context, biblical interpretation, and how we relate that to 21st century themes; we offer guidance on the use of the lectionary an in writing and evaluating a sermon; the sermon in worship; preaching at All-Age Worship….and more.  Each session will consist of theory, discussion and practice.  On completion of the course, delegates have permission to preach up to four times per year.

The course is titled ‘Bite Size’ by virtue of it being short in length but it is not short of content or depth.  That is because we need to ensure that participants gain sufficient insight and learning to enable them to begin to practice their skills safely within their church contexts.  [The material does not compare with that covered in Reader training and should not be considered to equate with that].  If you are interested in attending this course, please speak with your parish priest in the first instance, and then book your place. Led by Rev’d Phil White Monday 5th June, 12th June, 19th June, 26th June, 3rd July and 10th July.

7:30-9:30pm Jubilee House, Westgate, Southwell, NG25 0JH.
